In a larger cultural sense, Dr. Goldman said: "We have
all suffered an ambiguous loss. We have lost our sense of innocence and our
sense of safety. The loss is there but we can't put it into perspective. We
can't comfort ourselves easily, and who is there to provide comfort when
everyone is suffering?"
She said, "Those who had trauma in their lives previously
are feeling the loss even more deeply and have become more disorganized."
What is PTSD?
 | Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder that
can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events
such as military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, serious
accidents, or violent personal assaults like rape. People who suffer from
PTSD often relive the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, have
difficulty sleeping, and feel detached or estranged, and these symptoms can
be severe enough and last long enough to significantly impair the person’s
daily life. |
